Some students benefit from visual schedules and the use of timers to indicate that one activity is over and a new one is beginning. It is also important that all the hard activities are spread out throughout the day and placed in between reinforcing activities. Each area has some electronic device a computer, DVD player, or music box as well as a separate box of toys and items kept on top of a rolling cart that can go with the student and his instructional materials to each area. I am the mother of a child with autism also. I have found that looking at a situation in a different way has been really helpful in a lot of situations I have had to deal with over the years. Even though my son is high functioning, he had difficulties receiving choices. That would create too much information on top of trying to cope with the transition.

Hi Natalie, If you are in the US, your child is entitled to a Free Appropriate Public Education FAPE which can and should include an assessment by a Behavior Analyst of the current issues surrounding transitioning and a plan to get your son to go to school without resistance.

However, I do want to point out a different way of viewing the beach situation. Imagine you are on the beach reading a book and you hear your friend grunting and struggling. You look up and see that he is trying to move a heavy box but needs helps. This is not a stranger, but someone you know and love. You instantly feel compelled to put the book down and ask if they need help.
Once helping, your friend explains that he is trying to provide water bottles to everyone on the beach and needs your help to move the boxes to another location. Transitions are hard, but if we are patient and always encourage social connection and social reinforcement high fives, kisses, explaining why, silly play then we will shape a person who does not need to rely on a continuous supply of reinforcers as they get older.
