The study controlled for the religiosity of its subjects, which Wolfinger said has been shown by other studies to be a major factor in happy marriages, but not the only explanation.
He said the data he has is not conclusive on this point. One major factor affecting this result, he said, is the fact that premarital sex can often result in children born out of wedlock, which unfortunately tend to strain future relationships. In a similar study, Wolfinger examined the divorce rate in relation to the number of sexual partners a woman has had in her lifetime.
He said he often presents statistics to the couples he counsels, to try to help explain how premarital cohabitation and premarital sex can negatively affect the happiness of their marriage. Great job! If the couple is already living together, they will often admit it at that point, if reluctantly. Should we give him the same address? Whether it is dead , or dying , or not , should Catholics care? ICL is a website that provides articles, spiritual reflections, blogs and resources that strive to help Catholics better live lives of faith, according to its description.
Dana Gioia is a Catholic by faith and a poet by trade, and has served as the Poet Laureate of California since Gioia spent much of his career as a poet in the secular world, but told CNA that he has become an increasingly vocal Catholic, as it has become harder to be a Catholic in the world of poetry and literature.
Then suddenly, around the s, there is an explosion of Catholic literature in the United States, he said. Scott Fitzgerald, Walker Percy, William Tate and Brother Antonitus were leading the way many of them converts from Protestantism , Gioia said, and Catholicism was being taken seriously for the first time in American cultural life.
The reasons for this were several, Gioia suggested: firstly, as Catholics became accepted into American society, they became increasingly secularized. But beauty is not a luxury, it is a central and essential element of the Catholic faith. And we know this, because if we have anything at all to say about creation, it is that it is beautiful — nature is beautiful, the world is beautiful, our bodies are beautiful.
Bete added that poetry is often the fruit of silence and prayer, and vice versa — one can lead into the other. An example of this in scripture, he said, is the Canticle of Mary, when the pregnant Blessed Virgin Mary is visiting her cousin Elizabeth and bursts into poetic song about how God has blessed her by calling her to be the mother of Jesus.
She speaks in poetry. Many saints, too, have written great works of poetry, Pearce said, such as St. The book goes through 1, years of Christian poetry, from the year 1,,, Pearce said, from both well-known and lesser-known poets, and it includes short biographies of each poet and how they fit into the broader context of the Christian poetry and literary world.
Where are people, and then how do we find ways to get poetry in front of them? We are stronger together than we are alone. Who are the three or four best poets? Right now we do not have enough anthologies, or magazines; we do not have enough Catholic writers conferences. We need to build the infrastructure. Gioia started the first Catholic Imagination Conference for this reason — to bring together serious Catholic writers as a community.
The third such conference will be held at Loyola University this fall. Ultimately, Gioia said, while he is concerned about the state of Catholic poetry and literature in the U. And so if you believe that, how could you not be optimistic? Washington D. Detroit, Mich. The Detroit Free Press reports that the bill passed the legislature in the early hours of the morning Dec. Catholic theology of sexuality - Wikipedia
A — It seems like a simple enough question — is pre-marital sex always a sin? We have a lot of work to do. But, I am not shocked by the numbers. The simple answer to the question is yes, it is always a sin. Because we were made for something better! Let me break it down. Pre-marital sex is selfish: It is never about the other person.
Yes, there might be strong emotions, friendship, and some love which exists between persons — but, the act of premarital sex itself is never about true unselfish love see the next point. We are called to love others by being a selfless gift for them. Thus, when we choose something that is about me and is not good for the other, then it is not love. Pre-marital sex is use of another human being: John Paul II said using another person as a means to an end in this case your pleasure and not as an end unto themselves is the opposite of love.
It is reducing a human being to an object. Not treating them as a child of God. To be used is never part of our God-given purpose. Pre-marital sex is a misuse of our sexuality: Why do we have these desires in the first place?
It is to be open to new life procreation and to bring a married man and woman together unitive. These two ends are the purpose of marriage. Pleasure is a by-product of sex. A good by-product, but when it replaces one or both of the real purposes — it degrades the act and we are back at selfishness. Sex is a gift from God and like any gift can be used for good or bad.
It is also a meant to be a beautiful act between a man and wife — in the context of marriage. Sex is something intimate and wonderful. But, just like anything good, it can be twisted to be bad. This is what happens with pre-marital sexual acts. While all sexual activity not just intercourse outside of marriage is sinful, lust is as well. This is the deeper issue. It is when we grab hold of that thought and use it for our own pleasure. When we have a control of what is going on in our hearts and minds, then we will easily see where the line is drawn and will do all we can to avoid even approaching it.
We want to try and change our hearts, not just our actions. I know there are many Catholics who struggle with their sexuality and controlling their desires, but it is worth it. We can either be in control of our desires or allow them to control us. To give everything means we are free of selfishness in our love and chastity frees us of selfishness in our sexual desires. It is not a negative thing — it is a positive thing. Sex should be saved for marriage, where the deepest intimacy of all kinds is supposed to be.
We have lost the depth to what a intimacy really means. We end up deadening our sensitivity to it and putting present and future relationships at risk. Is this kind of lifestyle leading to contentment and goodness? We see brokenness and a poverty of love, much of it due to the misuse of our sexuality and a misunderstanding of who we are and why we exist.
You will never regret purity. But, you will always regret impurity, eventually. Marcel is a husband and father of five, serves on the pastoral council at St. The best defense of chastity and purity that I have ever read. Thank you so much. This one is a keeper. I wish we could get it to all young people. This is what they get from taking the word fornication out of the NAB bible translation e.
Galatians — fornication listed as mortal sin in older bibles now they translate it as the abstract word immorality. What is the immoral act? That is hidden from people who read the NAB. We need to fire some translators. It is also possible to enter a relationship in which nothing sexual occurs and still end up with a broken heart. Abstaining from premarital sex may decrease the chances of a broken heart, or may make the heartbreak less severe if it does occur, but it does not guarantee that one or both people will not have broken hearts if the relationship ends.
Thank you for the post. As a young woman who has sinned, realized it, asked for forgiveness, and am trying to forgive myself now it was a good read. May I suggest an additional perspective? From Fr. St Anthony Messenger.
Therefore, sex is a sign of commitment. Sex without commitment is a lie. The essence of marital commitment is you give up the right to change your mind. As long as you are dating or engaged, you can still change your mind.
When counseling engaged couples who are fornicating, I strongly suggest, from this point forward, treat your engagement like Lent — abstain until your wedding night.
Also, abstaining can bring into sharper focus just why you are marrying each other in the first place. You can believe that sex is an intimate act, but a test of your intimacy is a can you pray together? Both require vulnerability. Sex is easy, and along with cohabitation, can fool you into believing you have a healthy relationship. Maria Goretti, St. Augustine, pray for us. Catherine of Siena. I agree. This was very well written and made so much sense.
